9 MARCH - FEAST DAY

The Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Assen II built in his capital in Turnovo a temple in honor of the Holy 40 Martyrs from Sevastya, for celebrating his victory over Epirus Despot Theodore Comnenus at the village of Klokotnitsa. The battle occurred on the day of St. 40 Martyrs - 9 March 1230. The winner Tsar Ivan Assen II was officially welcomed by the citizens of Turnovo in the village Merdanya. In honor of this meeting outside the village was built the Monastery “St St 40 Martyrs” that nowadays exists.
